A review of Swedish recording artist Robyn's Grammy-nominated dance song "Dancing On My Own," which she co-wrote and co-produced with Patrik Berger.

Acclaimed Swedish singer-songwriter Robyn released her Grammy-nominated single “Dancing on My Own,” on June 1, 2010, via her record label, Konichiwa Records.

Background on the Single

“Dancing on My Own” is featured on Body Talk Pt. 1, an eight-track CD which is the first installment of her Body Talk trilogy albums. The tune was both co-produced and co-written by Robyn and Patrik Berger.

Written with captivating lyrics, it is about a female narrator in a club, who is watching her former lover kissing another girl, and she is subsequently left dancing on her own.

According to her interview at iHeartRadio, prior to her July 29, 2010, performance at New York City’s P.C. Richard and Son Theater, Robyn stated that she wrote this song “in November, in Stockholm,” when “it was dark,” and during a time when “she was clubbing a lot and watching people in this environment. I think it’s an important place for my generation. It’s a place where people go to be a part of something bigger than themselves.”

Dancing On My Own: Powerhouse Performance

Robyn’s vocal performance of “Dancing On My Own” is breathy, powerful and electrifying, and when she sings it in a live setting, she truly outdoes herself. Her audience is motivated to dance along with her. She showcases a lot of attitude and soul in this song. Equally mesmerizing is her acousic rendition of this tune, such as the version that she performed live at the Rimmel Room in 2010. It perfectly conveys the themes of loneliness and solitude and many listeners can relate to its universal subject matter.

Dancing On My Own: An International Phenom

The song was a smash hit worldwide. According to Billboard Magazine, it peaked at #3 on the Hot Dance Club Songs for the week ending July 17, 2010; moreover, the tune reached #1 on the Billboard charts in her native Sweden, and spent two weeks in that top position, in July 30, 2010 and August 6, 2010, respectively.

Additionally, “Dancing On My Own” garnered her a deserving Grammy nod for Best Dancing Recording in 2011, where she was up against such mega-stars as Lady Gaga, Rihanna, La Roux and Goldfrapp. It is a pity that she did not walk away with the trophy, since it was by far the most superior dance vocal in that category.

The Verdict

In summation, Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own” is one of the greatest dance songs of the past decade! After co-writing and co-producing such a stellar track, it is safe to say to Robyn won’t be “dancing on her own” any time soon.

Robyn has definitely reshaped modern dance music and has molded it into the genre it is today.
