Acclaimed singer-songwriter Richie McDonald, the former lead vocalist of the group Lonestar, released his Slow Down album on December 1, 2010, via his independent record label, Loremoma Music.

It features twelve ballads, all of which were written or co-written by McDonald; moreover, he co-produced the record along with Tommy Lee James, who is also featured on backing vocals.

Background on Richie McDonald

In addition to co-writing chart-topping songs for Lonestar such as “I’m Already There,” “My Front Porch Looking In,” and “Mr. Mom,” the biography section of McDonald’s official website also indicates that he has composed tunes for such noteworthy country artists as John Michael Montgomery, Sara Evans, Billy Dean and Clay Walker.

Songs on the Album

The CD opens with the title track “Slow Down,” which is the theme of the album, since in his liner notes, McDonald reveals that the reasons behind leaving Lonestar were to ‘slow down’ and spend time at home with his wife Lorie, son Rhett, and two daughters Mollie and Maisie.

It is followed with “Growing Old Together,” which is a declaration of how happy he is that he ‘growing old’ with his wife.

Yet another stellar track is “Guntersville Gazette,” which deals with the reality of the news that are taking place in a small town including births, weddings, honor rolls, sports wins, and even deaths of old friends. This poignant song is certain to bring tears to one’s eyes.

McDonald showcases his dynamic vocal range on such tunes as the lead-off single “Footprints on the Moon,” “How Do I Stop,” and “Hey God,” where he expresses his gratitude toward God.

In “Thankful,” McDonald sings about how blessed he is to have a loving wife and three beautiful children. Equally compelling is “This House,” which deals with all the memories that he and his family have had in their home.

The album closes with the emotional “I’ll Be Waiting,” leaving the listener yearning for more ballads from McDonald.

The Verdict

In summation, Richie McDonald is able to co-produce, co-write and record a well-crafted CD that consists of tunes that many listeners can relate to. Every song on this record is a keeper! It is perhaps McDonald’s most personal album to date, since it allows us to get a glimpse of his life and family, thanks to his sincere storytelling.
