A review of Richie McDonald's album "If Every Day Could Be Christmas," featuring a collaboration with pianist Jim Brickman on "Coming Home for Chistmas."

Singer-songwriter Richie McDonald released his If Every Day Could Be Christmas CD on November 6, 2007, via his indie record label, Stroudavarious Records.

The former lead singer of the band Lonestar, McDonald co-produced this project with Frank Myers and Gary Baker; moreover, he co-wrote four out of its twelve tracks, including "Coming Home for Christmas," "Petersbilt Sleigh," "Christmas Lights" and "Blessed are the Hands that Give."

Songs on McDonald's Christmas CD

McDonald’s Christmas album opens with the title track tune "If Every day Could Be Christmas," which conveys the theme of the album: love.

It is followed by the fun and upbeat "Why Santa’s Fat," where the narrator in the song is coming up with interesting reasons as to why Santa could possibly be overweight. "Peterbilt Sleigh" is yet another fun, up-tempo vocal.

Collaboration with Jim Brickman

The highlight song is "Coming Home for Christmas," where McDonald collaborates with acclaimed pianist Jim Brickman, who was also one of the co-writers of the song. The inclusion of Brickman on this project is sheer brilliance!

Renditions of Classic Christmas Tunes

McDonald offers noteworthy renditions of such classic Christmas tunes as “The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire),” where he showcases his strong range, as well as “Mary Did You Know,” “White Christmas” and “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of The Year,” which features a slower tempo than we are used to, however, it suits McDonald’s vocal style.

Additionally, McDonald’s version of the traditional carol “O Holy Night” is one of the most compelling renditions by a male artist since Joe Nichols covered it for his A Traditional Christmas CD back in 2004.

The album closes on an inspirational note with “Blessed Are the Hands That Give,” which is certain to be a fan-favorite recording.

The Verdict

In summation, Richie McDonald has recorded and co-produced a captivating Christmas album! In addition to McDonald, Baker and Myers also do a good job on the record's production.

This is the quintessential CD to listen to with your family during the holiday season, especially when the snow is falling down on the ground, as well as when presents are being wrapped or opened, and even when the Christmas tree is getting decorated. McDonald's voice has the ability to soothe any listener.
