Jake Owen's sophomore album, Easy Does It, was released on February 24, 2009, via his label, RCA Records Nashville. He co-wrote eight out of the ten tracks on this record.

Background on Jake Owen

Throughout his career in the industry, Owen has been the recipient of the Top New Male Vocalist award by the Academy of Country Music (ACM) in 2009, and has been nominated for Grammy and Country Music Association (CMA) awards respectively.

Singles Released from "Easy Does It"

The first single was “Don’t Think I Can’t Love You,” a love song which peaked at #2 on the Billboard Hot Country Charts. His vocals on this bluesy tune are reminiscent to those of country pioneer Merle Haggard.

The follow-up was “Eight Second Ride,” a fan-favorite tune that was yet another Top 15 hit for Owen on country radio. It initially appeared on his debut CD Startin' With Me, but the version on this CD consists of a few minor lyric changes.

"Tell Me" was the third and final single that did not fare chart-wise as well as the two others, only peaking in the Top 35.

Prime Cuts

"Cherry On Top” is about unconditional love, and “Anything For You” is the quintessential ballad for wedding receptions. Meanwhile, fans that reminisce about living in small towns could give the midtempo “Every Reason I Go Back” a listen. “Green Bananas” is a mature tune where the narrator sings about being diagnosed with a disease.

The album concludes with the inspirational “Nothin’ Grows in Shadows," which is the most compelling song on the CD. It tackles the negative consequences of bullying, whether it is done by children at school, or by the parents who are yelling at them from the bleachers for not winning their athletic competitions. This closing track is worthy of the 'repeat' button.

The Verdict

In summation, there is no sophomore slump in Owen's latest CD. He proves to his fans that he is more than just good looks. He emerges as a gifted singer, guitar player and songwriter. There are no filler tracks and each song had the potential to do well on the charts. It is an eclectic effort that can fit any mood his listeners may be in. He stands as one of Nashville’s most promising male vocalists.
