A review of Jack Matranga and Brooke White's newest EP "Gemini," which features the songs "Feathers," "Inside Outside" and "Telephone Games."

Jack and White’s newest EP Gemini is expected to be released on August 30, 2011, via the indie record label, June Baby Records.

Background on Jack and White

The duo Jack and White is made up of American Idol Season 7 fifth place finalist Brooke White and singer-songwriter Jack Matranga.

While competing on Idol, White earned rave reviews from the judges for her compelling renditions of the classic Carole King songs “Beautiful” and “You’ve Got a Friend,” as well as The Beatles' “Let It Be” and Carly Simon's “You’re So Vain.”

This EP is an extension to her work on Idol and to her solo debut album High Hopes & Heartbreak.

The album's title was derived from their star signs, since both vocalists were born in the month of June, thus making them geminis.

Prime Cuts on the EP

All of the six tracks on this EP were written and recorded by White and Matranga.

The EP opens with its stellar title track “Gemini,” which features a catchy chorus, stunning instrumentation and soaring vocals.

It’s followed by “Double Trouble” and “Inside Outside.” “Telephone Games” is perhaps the highlight song of the album, since their harmonies on it are reminiscent to those of Simon & Garfunkel.

Equally mellifluous is the tune “Smoke and Mirrors,” which is worthy of the repeat button.

The EP closes with “Feathers,” where Matranga and White showcase their delicate and soothing vocals, and leave their listeners yearning for more.

The Verdict

In summation, Jack and White’s latest project Gemini is a keeper! There are no filler tracks in this release, which makes it challenging to pick a favorite tune. Each song is worthy of becoming a radio single. Their songwriting is solid and their voices blend well together and produce exquisite harmonies.

Their music possesses the ability to transport their listeners to different realms.

Fans that enjoyed Brooke White’s music during her tenure on American Idol, as well as her debut CD, will absolutely love her latest EP, which features the raw talent of an exceptional and gifted musician, Jack Matranga. He is certainly one of indie music's best kept secrets.

Hopefully, this EP is a substantial indication that there will be more great music to come from the duo in the future!
