Tyler Hilton speaks to Suite101 about his own charity, future plans, success and offers advice for musical hopefuls

Singer-songwriter Tyler Hilton opens up his own charity, TH Books for Kids, as well as his plans for the future and the hardest aspect of his job. Hilton also offers advice for hopefuls who are interested in pursuing professional careers in music and reveals his definition of the word success.

Tyler Hilton's Charity: TH Books For Kids

According to Tyler Hilton, TH Books for Kids is "a charity I started with a bunch of friends of mine from Palm Springs, where I'm from, in California. It just kinda started cause there are so many problems to help solve in the world and I thought literacy was like giving the fisherman the fishing pole, as opposed to the fish. If we could get kids reading at a really young age, that could kinda help."

"So we started this charity and it's been great. I did not know how many people would get involved in it. A lot of my fans will come up with something (like a school needs some books), and then I'll put it up on my website and I'll play a show," Hilton says. "People would rally around it and gather the books together and they make the donations which is killer. It's really helping other people help people in their community, which is really cool," he further adds. Particularly impressive about Hilton's charity is that it is "ongoing," so Hilton and his fans are "always doing cool stuff with it."

Hilton's Future Plans

Hilton's plans for the future include "going back out on tour in October. I have a new record coming out early next year, so I'm just kinda getting ready to go back out on the road again."

The hardest aspect of his job includes "staying up when there is a lot of downtime, and keeping cool when there are a lot of things happening. It's just kinda hard to keep it all consistent."

Hilton Offers Advice For Hopefuls

For hopefuls who aspire to pursue careers in the music industry, Hilton recommends they "just keep playing and keep practicing and keep writing. Do that thing that you want to do as much as you can. There is really no substitute for that."

For Hilton, success means "being where you want to be at that particular moment. I don't know if it's an actual plane or an actual finish line, but it's a series of checkpoints along the way."

For his dedicated fans, Tyler Hilton concludes "I just can't say thank you enough for gathering around me, and being on my website, and coming to the shows, because without you I would just be a garage band."
