Suite101 interview with Rebecca Culhane, where she talks about her indie pop music career, and shares her experiences on "American Idol" and future plans.

Suite101 had the chance to speak with indie pop musician Rebecca Culhane. She talks about her musical influences, independent music career, American Idol, and acting endeavors.

Rebecca Culhane Discusses Musical Influences

“I am influenced by a wide variety of musicians, which include The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Colbie Caillat, Lily Allen, Jimi Hendrix, Panic! At the Disco, Jason Mraz, and Michael Buble. I have a huge appreciation for all genres, and I also enjoy musical theatre,” she says.

Rebecca Culhane Talks About Being an Independent Musician

On recording as an indie pop songstress, she remarks “It feels great! I definitely have more creative freedom because there is no right or wrong or certain image I have to portray or be locked inside of. I am just doing my own thing. I'm always excited to work with other musicians, because I learn so much from every individual I collaborate with.”

Rebecca Culhane Talks About “American Idol”

American Idol was a great experience for me. I auditioned via webcam through the MySpace auditions, and earned my golden ticket to Hollywood at a callback in LA. I got sent home during the group night round due to lack of sleep and completely spacing my lyrics. I took a break from it this year to concentrate on releasing my album, but I'm thinking about giving it another shot next year.”

Rebecca Culhane Opens Up About Acting

“Aside from my music career, I've been involved in quite a bit of commercial acting in the Midwest. I was recently in Los Angeles for a musical venture, and got the opportunity to do some background work on Grey's Anatomy, and the Discovery channel's Unusual Suspects. Having several different creative outlets is very important to me. It's my therapy.”

Rebecca Culhane’s Future Plans

“My plans are to continue to write and record my next album. I really want it to be a joint project and a collaboration with some of my incredibly talented musician friends. I'll also keep pursuing auditions and see where that takes me in the acting world,” Culhane shares.

“I would love to collaborate with Brendon Urie from Panic! At the Disco,” she says. “He's a brilliant musician, vocalist, writer, dancer, and not to mention, he's a babe. Also, Jason Mraz. He's so clever, has a voice like velvet, and I can never get enough of his music.”

Culhane states, “My album North of Normal is now on iTunes. One of my proudest moments in life was its peak position at #38 on the iTunes Singer/Songwriter Charts. You might have already heard my music without knowing it. My original song ‘Outstanding’ is now featured on a ‘Sanford Health: Ready for Baby’ commercial.”

“Fans can stay connected by finding me on Facebook at my music page, and also by following my shenanigans on Twitter,” she adds.
