Indie recording artist and producer KDrew talks to Suite101 on Monday, February 6, 2012, about his musical inspirations, latest EP Free (which comes in seven installments), new video for "One," and future endeavors in music.
KDrew: Co-Founder of Indie Music Group
Along with John Levy, KDrew is one of the co-founders of Indie Music Group. It has an “Entourage”-style support system, where there are seven individuals living under one roof of a New Jersey house, and they are working on the development and expansion of his music career.
KDrew Discusses Influences
“Everything ranges from Madonna, to Bruce Springsteen, to Michael Jackson, to Coldplay, to Maroon 5 to Skrillex. I have a wide variety of influences,” he says.
KDrew Talks “Free” EPs
“The reason I put out seven series of Free is because people put out so much material every single day. I don’t want to fall behind, and I want to stay in everybody’s faces. My fan-base has stuck by me since I have done remixes, and it’s been working really well. I am glad everybody has been enjoying it,” he reveals.
Each volume of KDrew’s EPs consists of a plethora of musical styles ranging from pop, rock, dance, hip-hop, and dubstep.
He lists “One in a Million” as his personal favorite recording. “That song signifies how it feels to be an independent artist, and overcoming all of the obstacles that come with it. It’s a self-empowering tune,” he shares.
“Thank you to the fans for believing in me. It’s a win-win for all of us. I love your support and I appreciate it. I am doing this for you guys!”
KDrew Talks “One” Video
“‘One’ was just a crazy experience, where we had one cameraman, and a girl and I were running across the city and we were catching trains at 4 AM since we were being chased by somebody. The whole city is empty which gives you a desolate vibe, and we left the storyline very broad,” KDrew says.
Subsequently, “One” garnered the recognition as an “MTV Buzzworthy” video. “That was probably one of the coolest experiences of my life!” he exclaims.
KDrew Talks About Being on “Elvis Duran and the Morning Show”
“That was one of the greatest moments of my career so far, because you walk into the Z100 studios and you are looking at pictures of Justin Timberlake, Shakira, and all of these big artists. It was cool to know that you are going to get interviewed on Elvis Duran and the Morning Show. That was surreal,” he acknowledges.
KDrew Talks About his Future
“I definitely want to sign other artists and produce music for them, and help steer them in the right direction. That is my #1 priority in the future,” he says.
He discloses that Celine Dion and Lady Gaga are his dream duet choices.
When asked about his alternate career choice, KDrew notes that he would want to own a DJ company.”I just always wanted music to be a part of my life, and by DJing I could keep my dream alive,” he adds.
KDrew Opens Up About Hobbies
His hobbies include different sports (basketball, football and baseball), as well as culinary and magic. “I was always into the fine arts growing up,” he shares.
