Suite101 interview with indie singer-songwriter Dion Roy, where he talks about his "Welcome Hope" EP and his forthcoming "Rock the Schools" benefit concert.

On Thursday, September 22, 2011, Suite 101 chatted with indie singer-songwriter Dion Roy. He talked about his latest Welcome Home EP, as well as his upcoming Rock the Schools benefit concert on November 18, in New York City's Gramercy Theatre.

Dion Roy notes that his greatest musical influences include such artists as “Jeff Buckley, Ryan Adams, Keane, and Snow Patrol.”

Dion Roy Talks About his New EP

According to Dion Roy, he states, “Welcome Home is my newest EP. It consists of six tracks, where the majority of it was recorded in Los Angeles. We recorded the last track in New York. ‘Leave Me Out of It’ is the lead-off single, which is a poppy and fun song. There are a few darker songs on there as well.”

“I had Tyler Hilton sing back-up on ‘This Moment is Mine.’ Tyler just nailed it out! He sounded awesome on it as usual,” Dion adds.

On working with Josiah Leming on “Leave Me Out of This,” Dion remarks “it was really fun. I just finished up a tour with Josiah yesterday. He’s been playing piano on ‘Hear Me Out’ on tour, which is the fourth track on the record. Josiah’s a good friend of mine and he is a good guy to hang with.”

Dion Roy Talks About the Upcoming "Rock the Schools" Concert

Dion Roy is expected to perform on Friday, November 18, 2011, at Gramercy Theatre, as part of the Rock the Schools benefit concert, along with Ryan Cabrera and Tyler Hilton.

“The event is going to be benefitting schools in New York, because there are music programs that are disappearing out of schools all the time. I was in a music program throughout high school for four years. Even if you are not going to do music professionally, it should be a part of everybody’s education. It’s as important as gym. Music is everywhere and everyone should have access to it!” Dion exclaims.

Dion Roy Talks About his Future Plans

“I am in writing mode at the moment,” Dion acknowledges. “I have been writing a lot and testing out a lot of new material out on the road. I’m going to be pushing Welcome Home for a while but I’ll be flying back out to California in October to finish another batch of songs. I’m not sure if I’ll do an EP or a full-length album yet, but there will be new music coming out soon.”

Dion Roy Talks About his Use of Social Media

“I’m very active on my Twitter, where I have a pretty loyal following on there. I keep my fans up-to-date, especially when I finish new songs. They all know that I go to many different taco places, since I’m obsessed with tacos,” he says with a laugh.
