On Saturday May 7, 2011, Suite101 was afforded the opportunity to chat with singer-songwriter Benny Marchant of the indie label Marina Records.
Marchant Talks About Upcoming Album
“When I went into the studio I brought twenty songs to the table. I worked them out with Joe Chiccarelli. We tried to pick which ones would go best for the record. In pre-production, we decided which songs to choose. We really liked the ones that we chose for the album and I am still working on the ones that we didn’t pick,” he says.
“For my latest project, I have been inspired musically by a lot of different artists including Tom Petty, Lou Reed and Pearl Jam. For creative purposes, my album’s release date has gotten pushed back one more month from its original May 31, 2011.” Marchant adds.
Marchant Talks “Cold Weather”
According to Marchant, “Cold Weather is my favorite song, and it’s the title track of the full-length album. That song was the anchor for the record. I love the music and it turned out so wonderful. It definitely exceeded all of my expectations. It’s the second single. The first one was ‘Conversations Missed’ which was released with our EP.”
Marchant reveals that he had originally written the tune while he was on a bus with his then-band The Kings Royal, and it had a pop sound to it. "Once I started this project, I changed the format of the song and a bridge came to it. It's a great song," he adds.
On whether there is a difference recording in the studio and singing live, Marchant remarks “not really. I am more comfortable in the studio only because I can hear better, so I enjoy it more since I love hearing music.”
Marchant's Future Plans
“We are setting up a summer tour right now to help release the record. I am very excited for that. Looks like we are doing a lot of gigs in New York and San Diego. We’ll be doing an East Coast tour. We are playing at the Rockwood Music Hall in Manhattan, NY in July 6, 2011. The plan this year is to just get out and play as much as we can,” the singer-songwriter says.
Advice for Hopefuls
For aspiring singer-songwriters Marchant states “just be yourself. Write as much as you can, and keep playing.”
For his fans, Marchant concludes “thank you so much for your support! I love it and wouldn’t be anywhere without you guys.”
