Country singer Chely Wright released her seventh album Lifted Off the Ground on May 4, 2010, via her label, Vanguard Records.
With the exception of "Heavenly Days," all of the eleven songs featured on the album were written by Wright. She co-wrote the aforementioned tune with veteran country singer Rodney Crowell, who also served as the producer of the record.
Background on Chely's Career
A Kansas native, Wright released her acclaimed debut CD Woman in the Moon in 1994, and a year later she was honored by the Academy of Country Music (ACM) as its "Top New Female Vocalist."
Her hit song "Single White Female" went to the top of the Billboard Country Charts in 1999. Thanks to its success, she was nominated for "Top Female Vocalist" by the ACM in 1999, in a category that included such songstresses as Jo Dee Messina, Faith Hill, Shania Twain and Martina McBride.
Noteworthy Songs on the CD
It opens with the lead-off single "Broken," which a bluesy yet moving tune; alas, it did not fare well on on the Billboard Country Charts.
The mellifluous "Heavenly Days" features Rodney Crowell's velvet voice on harmony, as well as country singer Jedd Hughes on acoustic and electric guitar.
The up-tempo "Notes to the Coroner" is catchy, yet emotional due to its depressing lyrics. It would make a suitable choice for a prospective radio single. "Snow Globe" is equally heart-wrenching and features Randy Scruggs on acoustic guitar.
The subtle "Wish Me Away" showcases the serenity in her voice.
Her song "Like Me" is also the title of her memoir, and she is left questioning as to whether or not anyone will ever know her lover as intimately as she does.
"Damn Liar" is one of the most powerful tracks on the album due to its catchy chorus, and she showcases much angst towards a former lover of hers, as she does in "Object of Your Rejection."
The closing track, the soothing "Shadows of Doubt," is a statement about her inner strength.
The Verdict
In summation, Wright proves that she is indeed stronger than ever on this CD. Thus far, it is the most authentic, courageous and honest album of her career. Although it may be more melancholic than any of her previous efforts, it showcases her overall talent as a songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist.
