A review of Bryan White's latest album 'Dustbowl Dreams,' featuring 'Erika's Song,' 'When You Come Around' and a 'Hands of Time' duet with Steve Wariner.

Country singer Bryan White’s latest studio album Dustbowl Dreams was released on September 28, 2009. He co-wrote eight of the album’s ten tracks.

Highlight Songs on the CD

White’s lead-off single The Little Things, deals with the simple pleasures that mean the world to him. It is a pity that country radio did not embrace this tune, since it is a soaring ballad.

In Get it Together, his vocals are reminiscent to those of such country acts as Chuck Wicks and Rascal Flatts.

One of the most emotional songs on the record is When You Come Around. In it, the narrator sings about his estranged relationship with his alcoholic father, where he makes a powerful statement that he’d love to be standing there, the day the father comes around and abandons his bad habit.

He features his musical hero, Steve Wariner, on the upbeat and fun Hands of Time, which was co-written by Wariner. The inclusion of this collaboration on the album is pure genius, since it is a substantial indication that White is one of the greatest duet vocalists in country music, especially after his spellbinding duet From this Moment On in 1998 with Shania Twain.

Erika’s Song is a beautiful tribute to his wife, featuring a stunning orchestra arrangement. It is sung with maximum soul and grace. It’s a tune all wives would wish their husbands would write and sing exclusively for them.

The highlight track is the spitfire opening title track, which epitomizes what Bryan White is all about: a proud Oklahoman, whose grandfather was an auctioneer, and it deals with the ups and downs in his life; moreover, it’s a journey of self-discovery to find out what real life and love mean. Hopefully, with time, this song will someday be White’s signature song!

The vivid imagery in Beautiful Place makes the listeners feel as if they are on a tropical island. It closes with On My Own, where White’s vocals and harmonies are mellifluous as ever.

The Verdict

As a singer and songwriter, Bryan White is stronger than ever on Dustbowl Dreams, since there are no filler tracks on this CD. He has scored a comeback after a nine-year hiatus from music. This album is a must for any country fan’s record collection.

Along with Reba McEntire and Carrie Underwood, White is one the greatest musical treasures that the state of Oklahoma has to offer.
