The 28th annual MTV Video Music awards (VMAs) are expected to take place on Sunday, August 28, 2011, at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. This year, the moonman trophy for "Best Video with a Message" will be given out for the very first time.
Nominees for "Best Video with a Message"
Six musical acts are up for the "Best Video with a Message" MTV VMA. This year's nominees include Eminem featuring Rihanna for "Love The Way You Lie," Lady Gaga's "Born This Way," Katy Perry's "Firework," Pink's "Perfect," Rise Against for "Make It Stop (September's Children) and Taylor Swift's "Mean."
Analysis and Prediction
All six videos in this category are poignant and captivating, and touch the hearts of music listeners worldwide in one way or another.
Eminem and Rihanna’s collaborative video for “Love the Way You Lie” tackles the serious subject of domestic violence, meanwhile the equally compelling video clip “Make it Stop (September’s Children)” by Rise Against, opposes teenage suicide and bullying; moreover, it encourages lesbian and gay teenagers to hold on, and to never give up hope, since things will get better.
Pop queen Lady Gaga is fighting for equality in her “Born This Way” video, and wants her fans, who are affectionately known as “little monsters” to love and believe in themselves. An equally moving video with a similar theme is Katy Perry’s “Firework,” in which the “Teenage Dream” songstress looks nothing short of glamorous.
For anybody who has ever experienced low self-esteem, Pink’s music video for “Perfect,” is the quintessential clip to boost up anybody’s morale.
Pop-country darling Taylor Swift is challenging her naysayers in her “Mean” video, and notes that they will someday regret being rude to her. It is safe to say that Swift is living proof that she has proved anybody who has ever doubted her wrong.
The Verdict
This is by far one of the strongest categories at this year's MTV VMA ceremony. Any of these videos will be deserving of the win, since they all raise social awareness by opposing prejudices and by advocating equality and kindness in one way or another.
Since this is a fan-voted category, the odds-on favorites to win here are either Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift or Katy Perry, since they are three leading ladies of contemporary pop music with the largest number of Twitter followers and fans.
